Regina sees rise in commercial building

Last year was strong year for building activity in Regina, according to figures published by the city council.

The City of Regina Building Permit Report shows that there was an increase in the construction of new commercial buildings, though there was a slight decline in the overall number of building permits.

In 2017, 49 new commercial building permits were issued with a total value of CA$101m as compared to 36 commercial building permits valued at CA$78m issued in 2016.

The value of commercial permits grew to CA$311m in 2017, which includes renovations and alterations. This is compared to CA$303m in 2016.

“Regina continues to have a strong, diversified, stable economy,” said Mayor Michael Fougere. “There continues to be elevated levels of construction, and the increase in new commercial and commercial alteration permits is a strong indicator of growth and confidence in our city.”

In 2017, the overall number of building permits issued declined slightly to 3,138 from 3,373 the year previous. This is the result of a small decrease in new residential construction, along with a lower number of permits for residential and commercial alterations.

Permits issued in December for projects over CA$1m included the Salvation Army multi-use humanitarian building valued at CA$6m, new construction of an apartment valued at CA$5.75m, construction of a new retail building in the Greens valued at CA$2.2m and building alterations to a single-family dwelling valued at CA$1.1m.
