Prince Albert firm fined over falls hazards

A roof and guttering company based in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, has been fined for violations of occupational safety regulations.

Pro Image Roofing & Gutters Ltd was fined a total of CA$6,880 for three contraventions. The fines include CA$5,000 in total charges on all three counts, plus a total surcharge of CA$1,880.  The company was found not guilty on one other count.

The company was found to have contravened subsection 116(2) of the regulations, which relates to failure to ensure that workers use a fall protection system where they may fall 3m. It also contravened subsection 91(1) by failing to provide approved industrial protective headwear and requiring workers to use it. The third contravention was of clause 253(2)(d), as it failed to ensure that a portable ladder extends at least 1m above any platform, roof or other landing to which the ladder is used as a means of access.

Charges were laid after an occupational health officer observed workers not using fall protection or personal protective equipment at a site near Emma Lake, Saskatchewan on 27 January 2016. No workers were injured.
