Three firms fined over safety shortcomings

A lack of safety equipment on site has brought fines for three Saskatchewan companies.

The three companies pleaded guilty in Saskatoon Provincial Court to occupational health and safety violations.

Cactus Roofing Ltd pleaded guilty to contravening sections of the regulations designed to ensure that workers wear approved industrial protective headwear and use a fall-protection system in work areas where a worker may fall 3m or more.

The company was fined CA$1,500 plus a CA$$600 surcharge on each count for a total of $4,200.  An occupational health officer observed workers working in October last year without using fall protection or personal protective equipment.  No one was injured.

Xray Roofing Inc pleaded guilty to contravention of the same two regulations. One additional charge was stayed in court.  The company was fined CA$1,000 plus a CA$400 surcharge on each count, giving a total of $2,800.  Charges resulted from a site inspection in June 2016, when an officer observed workers not using proper safety equipment.  Fortunately, no one was injured.

Michael Groulx, operating as Mico Construction, also pleaded guilty to the same to charges. It was fined CA$1,000 plus a CA$400 surcharge on each count, a total of CA$2,800 in fines.  One additional charge was stayed in court.  An officer observed workers not using proper fall protection or safety equipment at a site last October.  No one was injured.
