Further contracts awarded for Dartmouth hospital

Six companies have been awarded construction contracts for the expansion and renovation of Dartmouth General Hospital in Nova Scotia.

The contracts, which have a combined value of approximately CA$7m, have been awarded following the second of three construction service tenders for the work at the hospital. Eight companies won contracts in May (link opens in new tab) and the final construction tender package is expected to be issued in late fall.

The latest contacts cover the construction of the exterior of the new addition, including masonry, structural steel, metal cladding and roofing. They were awarded to five Nova Scotia companies and one from New Brunswick:

Darim Masonry (Lower Sackville);

RKO Steel (Dartmouth);

Southeast Drywall (Dartmouth);

Flynn Canada (Dartmouth);

McCarthy’s Roofing (Dartmouth);

Royal Door (Moncton).

Construction at Dartmouth General started in May and is expected to be complete in late 2021. The expansion and renovations at the hospital will result in the addition of 48 beds on the fifth floor, as well as eight new operating rooms to replace four existing suites. The work also includes extensive upgrades to outpatient and diagnostic imaging areas. This is in addition to renovations already under way on the third and fourth-floor inpatient wings to be completed this fall.

The work forms part of the larger QEII redevelopment project, which also includes projects at the QEII Health Sciences Centre’s Halifax Infirmary, Hants Community Hospital and other sites that will support the eventual closure of the Centennial and Victoria buildings in Halifax.
